On his inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” America's largest city, declaring “a different age” and an audacious beginning to his tenure.

A Historic Leader

The 34-year-old figure, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

The estimated $10 billion cost of these services may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the city's top earners and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”
